The world of 3D printing on Wednesday welcomed an unexpected new player as rotary tool specialist Dremel announced it will be releasing a consumer-grade 3D printer of its own next month.
Dremel’s 3D Idea Builder is an enclosed printer with a build area of 230 x 150 x 140 mm (9 x 5.9 x 5.5 inches). It is capable of printing at a resolution of up to 100 microns, accepts PLA filament in 10 different colors and has a color touchscreen. The printer can be operated as a standalone unit run by onboard software or through a connected computer.

The 3D Idea Builder was announced by Dremel president John Kavanagh during a keynote at MakerCon in New York City. The executive said the device was designed for both those experienced in the world of 3D printing as well as newcomers, adding that 98 percent of people don’t know what a 3D printer is or does.
Dremel isn’t going at it alone, however, as the company also announced a partnership with Autodesk. This venture will help provide buyers with online design tools as well as free 3D models that can be printed at home.

Dremel will open pre-orders on September 18 with retail availability slated for next month on Amazon and at select Home Depot and Canadian Tire stores. It’ll be sold for $999 which is on the lower end of the 3D printer price spectrum.
